Carnelian is a warm orange-to-red variety of chalcedony — a microcrystalline form of quartz — coloured by iron oxide within the stone. It forms in volcanic and sedimentary rock and is found in India, Brazil, Uruguay and Madagascar, in shades from soft amber to deep rust-red.
