Cat's Eye (Lehsunia, also called Vaidurya) is the Ketu ratna in Vedic astrology — one of the Navaratna, the nine sacred planetary gemstones. The stone’s defining feature is chatoyancy (from the French for ‘cat’s eye’): a sharp, moving band of reflected light that crosses the stone when rotated in light. This phenomenon occurs when fibrous inclusions are arranged in parallel within the mineral, creating a concentrated reflection that resembles the pupil of a cat contracting and dilating. The sharpness and brilliance of this band varies by stone — a sharp, well-centred band on a translucent stone is considered most desirable.
