Lapis Lazuli is not a single mineral but a metamorphic rock, composed primarily of lazurite (which gives its characteristic deep royal blue), with white calcite veining and gold pyrite flecks that create its signature starry appearance. The finest quality Lapis has been mined from the Badakhshan province of Afghanistan for over 6,000 years — the same source used by ancient Egyptians, Sumerian royalty, and Renaissance painters.

Egyptian pharaohs used Lapis Lazuli in their burial masks and jewelry as a symbol of divine wisdom. Tutankhamun’s gold death mask incorporated Lapis extensively. Ground Lapis produced ultramarine — the finest and most expensive blue pigment of the Renaissance era, used exclusively for the most sacred subjects in painting.
