Opal is a hydrated form of silica that can hold up to a fifth of its weight in water, its famous play-of-colour created as light diffracts through microscopic silica spheres. It forms in cracks and cavities in rock and is found chiefly in Australia, as well as Ethiopia and Mexico. In Vedic tradition it is associated with Venus (Shukra), planet of love, beauty and pleasure. Being water-rich, it is best protected from heat and dryness.
