Smoky Quartz is the brown to grey-black variety of quartz (silicon dioxide), its colour created by natural irradiation acting on trace aluminium within the crystal as it grows. It forms in granite cavities and pegmatites, and is found in Brazil, Madagascar, Scotland and the Swiss Alps, in shades from pale champagne to deep espresso.
