Amethyst is the violet variety of quartz (silicon dioxide), its purple colour created by trace iron and natural irradiation within the crystal. It forms in the cavities of volcanic rock, where mineral-rich water slowly grows the crystals over time. Amethyst is found in Brazil, Uruguay, Zambia and India, in shades ranging from soft lilac to deep royal purple.
