Ruby (Manik) is the Vedic gemstone of the Sun (Surya) and one of the nine Navaratna stones. It works by strengthening the Sun's influence in the chart — the foundation of confidence, authority and vitality — so that a weak or afflicted Sun is steadied. It is traditionally worn by those seeking recognition, leadership presence and the warmth to lead from within.

Ruby is the red variety of corundum (crystalline aluminium oxide), its rich colour drawn from traces of chromium. Among the hardest of gems, it is found in Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand and parts of Africa, and has been worn across millennia as a stone of passion and life force.

Keep it away from water, and cleanse with sage smoke, sound or moonlight when it feels heavy.

Keep it dry — remove before bathing, swimming and sleeping, and avoid perfume and harsh chemicals. Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth.

Recharging Methods
• Moonlight — safe and ideal; leave under a full moon overnight
• Selenite plate — place on selenite for 4–6 hours
• Sound — singing bowl or bells for 1–2 minutes
