Ruby, known in Sanskrit as Manik, is one of the Navaratna — the nine sacred gemstones of Vedic astrology. As the primary ratna of Surya (the Sun), it has been worn by rulers, warriors, and leaders across Indian history for thousands of years.

In Jyotish, the Sun governs confidence, self-expression, authority, the capacity to lead, and one's relationship with father figures. A weak Sun is associated with lack of recognition, self-doubt, poor authority, and difficulty being seen. Manik is traditionally prescribed to strengthen the Sun and activate its higher qualities.

Ruby is a corundum mineral coloured by traces of chromium, giving it a deep red to pink-red hue. Natural rubies carry a characteristic fluorescence — they appear to glow from within when light passes through them. Ruby sits at Mohs hardness 9, making it one of the most durable gemstones for everyday wear. Each natural stone carries unique inclusions — variations in depth of colour, clarity, and internal patterns that confirm its natural origin.

Jyotish protocol: Wear on the ring finger of the right hand. Activate on a Sunday morning after sunrise (see Ritual section). Dip briefly in raw cow's milk or milk-water to purify before first wear. Chant 'Om Suryaya Namah' 7 or 21 times while setting intention.

For daily crystal use: Wear on any finger. Hold in morning sunlight for a few minutes each day to recharge. Set your intention — what you are building toward.

Most effective during: presentations, negotiations, interviews, public speaking, or any moment that requires your full leadership presence. Worn consistently, its energy builds over time.

Ruby is one of the hardest gemstones (Mohs 9) and is durable for everyday wear. Clean gently with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive materials.

Energetic recharge: Place in direct morning sunlight for 20–30 minutes. Ruby draws its power from the Sun and recharges naturally under solar energy. Unlike most crystals, Ruby does not need moonlight — sun is its native element.

Store separately from softer stones to avoid scratching them with Ruby's hardness. The German silver band can be polished lightly with a dry silver cloth when needed.
